Around Labor Day 2000, the Malverne Jewish Center began its campaign to help the needy of our community by donating non-perishable items of food to Hatzilu Rescue, an organization dedicated to aiding the elderly and others in need. Since that time, the program has been an overwhelming success, thanks to your generosity and the generosity of visitors to our Temple.
While all kosher foodstuffs are always needed and certainly appreciated, there are certain items that are in particular need. These include:
Canned tuna or salmon
Coffee
Dry cereal
Canned or packaged soup (low sodium, of course)
All juices (in plastic or cardboard containers)
Instant Hot cereal
Pasta
Fruit salad
Puddings
Nutrition supplements, such as Ensure
Noodles
Rice
Macaroni & cheese
MAZON (the Hebrew word for "food") is a Jewish response to hunger
|
| | for lonely, elderly Jews who look forward to the meals delivered to their door each day by a friendly volunteer who stays to chat

|
| | for homeless, working families living in temporary shelter while saving money for a place of their own

|
| | for people with AIDS, who have lost the ability to shop and cook for themselves

|
| | for Russian and Ethiopian immigrants in Israel struggling to adjust to life in a new land

|
| |
and for tens of thousands of American Jews who express their concern for hungry people everywhere by giving to MAZON.
|
MAZON provides grants to a broad spectrum of nonprofit organizations working to ease the suffering of millions of hungry people worldwide.
Grants provide food for hungry people and support for organizations working for longer-term solutions to hunger and those providing the kinds of counseling, assistance and training that lead people back to productive lives in their communities.
Although grants are provided to many organizations serving the Jewish poor, in keeping with the best of Jewish tradition, MAZON responds to all who are in need.
MAZON asks American Jews to continue the ancient Jewish tradition of feeding the hungry by:
|
| | sharing the joy of festive occasions by contributing 3% of the cost of life-cycle celebrations.

|
| | contributing at Yom Kippur, the money that would have be spent on food during the single day of fasting, to help feed those whose fast is involuntary and perhaps without end.

|
| | at Passover letting "one who is hungry enter and eat" by giving to MAZON the amount of money that would been spent to invite one extra person to the Seder table.

|
| | giving to MAZON to commenorate happy occasions in the lives of friends and family members, or to honor the memory of loved ones.
|
Contributions are tax-deductible on itemized returns and are acknowledged promptly
